Stephen Spender on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs

 

Stephen_SpenderStephen Spender (1909–1995) was a member of the generation of British poets who came to prominence in the 1930s, a group—sometimes referred to as the Oxford Poets—that included W. H. Auden, Christopher Isherwood, C. Day Lewis, and Louis MacNeice.

Spender made two appearances on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs (created by Roy Plomley in 1942), the first on July 9, 1962 and the second on April 2, 1989. Click on these dates to download and listen to extracts of these fascinating recordings.
